Description
Rare map of Guatemala. From "Novus Orbis, sive Descrptio Indiae Occidentalis". This collection of voyages is often referred to as an edition of Herrera, which is not strictly correct. Bound with this Dutch edition of the original Spanish work of 1601 is, amongst other works, le Maire's official account of his voyage that discovered Cape Horn and another route to the Pacific. The lack of any great detail on this uncommon map reflects the official policy of protecting Spanish knowledge of the New World. Despite this the outline of the map is accurate for the period concerned. Later editions by De Bry and Hulsius. Uncoloured.
