Ralph Salomon started WorldView Antique Maps & Books after a long career in the adventure travel field. An amateur Africanist and historian, he views the offering of maps for sale as a logical, though more sedentary, extension of his world travels.

I welcome the opportunity to help established collectors add to their collection. Even more, I get great satisfaction from helping new collectors begin putting theirs together by helping them form a focus for their collection and then building their holdings according to budget and interest.”

Maps can be enjoyed from a variety of perspectives: as historical or scientific documents, as works of art or as remembrances of trips taken. Jonathan Potter, in his fine guide to map collecting, Collecting Antique Maps, lists nine major categories:

  • By area
  • By an individual map maker
  • Of a particular period
  • Showing particular geographical or decorative features
  • By theme
  • For their individual appearance
  • For their individual importance
  • For investment
  • For any other reason the individual might find of interest

Whatever your reason for building a collection, buying a gift or purchasing one special map, we stand ready to help.

"Now when I was a little chap I had a passion for maps. I would look for hours at South America or Africa, or Australia, and lose myself in all the glories of exploration. At that time there were many blank spaces on the earth, and when I saw one that looked particularly inviting on a map (but they all look that way) I would put my finger on it and say, when I grow up I will go there."
Joseph Conrad, "Heart of Darkness"
